    According to Dubai Customs (November 2016), the zone was established in 1999 as a specialised free zone for the vehicle import and re-export trade, and had about 400 licensed showrooms at that time. [source]

    Dubai Customs runs a customs centre inside the zone that handles vehicle import and re-export transactions. Since January 2021, car dealers in the zone who are registered with Dubai Customs can issue their vehicle certificates without visiting the centre. [source 1][source 2]
