How long does free zone company setup take?
Licence issuance can be quick, but a working company also needs an establishment card, visas and a bank account. Plan for each stage, not just the licence.
General information from official sources, not legal, tax or financial advice. What this means
- Who this is for
- Founders planning a UAE free zone setup who need a realistic timeline from application to operating company.
- Question answered
- How long does it take to set up a UAE free zone company, from application to visas?
Key takeaways
- The licence is one milestone; establishment card, visas and banking follow it.
- The sequence is application, name approval, initial approval, licence, establishment card, then visas.
- Residence visas involve an entry permit, medical, Emirates ID and stamping, each with its own wait.
- Incomplete documents and activities needing external approval cause most delays.
- Setup times on this site are as stated by each zone; confirm with the zone for your case.
On this page
Free zone setup happens in stages, and the licence is only the first milestone. A straightforward application with complete documents can receive a licence fairly quickly in many zones, but a company that can actually operate also needs an establishment card, residence visas for its owners or staff, and a bank account. Each of those stages adds time. The answer to "how long" is the total of all the stages you need, not only the licence time a zone states.
The stages in order
Most free zones follow broadly the same sequence:
- Application: you choose a package and activity, submit shareholder documents and complete the forms.
- Name approval: the zone checks that your proposed trade name is available and acceptable.
- Initial approval: the zone confirms it is willing to license the activity and shareholders, sometimes after compliance checks.
- Licence issuance: you sign the incorporation documents, pay fees and receive the licence and certificate of incorporation.
- Establishment card: the immigration card that allows the company to sponsor visas.
- Visas: entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and visa stamping for each person.
- Bank account: usually applied for after the licence, and often after the signatory's visa.
Some zones combine steps or run them in parallel. Others add steps for specific activities.

How long do visas add?
The visa stage is often longer than the licence stage, because it involves several separate steps:
- Entry permit: allows the person to enter or change status in the UAE.
- Medical fitness test: required for residence visas.
- Emirates ID: biometrics and card issuance.
- Visa stamping or issuance: the final residence permit.
Each step depends on appointment availability and the immigration authority of the emirate. If you are outside the UAE, you will need to travel for the medical and biometrics. If you are already in the UAE on another visa, a status change may be possible.
Planning point: if your bank requires a resident signatory, the visa timeline effectively becomes part of your banking timeline. See our guide to opening a bank account.
What causes delays?
Points that commonly affect timing:
- Incomplete documents: missing passport copies, unclear proof of address or unsigned forms.
- Attestation: corporate shareholders often need documents attested in their home country and in the UAE, which can take weeks.
- External approvals: some activities need approval from another regulator before the zone can license them.
- Name rejections: names that are too similar to existing ones, or that use restricted words.
- Compliance checks: shareholders from certain jurisdictions or with complex ownership structures may face extra review.
- Payment timing: stages often do not start until fees are paid.
Individual versus corporate shareholders
The type of shareholder has a big effect on timing:
| Shareholder type | Documents zones commonly list | What to ask the zone |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | Passport, photo, proof of address | Which documents need copies or originals |
| Several individuals | Documents for each, plus share split | Whether all shareholders must sign in person |
| Corporate shareholder | Certificate of incorporation, constitutional documents, board resolution, UBO details | Which documents need attestation, and where |
| Regulated activity | Additional approvals and business plan | Which authority approves, and who applies |
If speed matters, it can help to start attestation of corporate documents early, before you have finalised your zone choice.
Activities that take longer
Some activities need approvals from authorities outside the free zone. These commonly include certain:
- financial services and fintech activities
- crypto and web3 activities
- healthcare and education activities
- food and regulated product trading
If your activity is in one of these areas, ask the zone which approvals are needed and who obtains them.
How to keep setup on track
A few steps make a measurable difference:
- Prepare documents first. Have clear scans of passports and proof of address ready before you apply.
- Choose activities carefully. Pick activities that match your actual business, and avoid adding regulated ones you do not need.
- Submit alternative names. Most zones allow several name options.
- Plan travel for visas. Book your trip around the expected establishment card date.
- Start banking conversations early. Ask banks what they need while the licence is in progress.
Remote setup
Ask each zone whether the licence stage can be completed online with remote signing. The medical test and Emirates ID biometrics for a residence visa take place in the UAE. Each zone page links to the zone's online portal where it publishes one.
Putting it together
When you plan, add up each stage you need:
- licence stage (as stated by the zone)
- establishment card
- visas for each person, including travel
- bank account opening
Then add a buffer for document issues. If you want a shortlist of zones that fit your activity and timeline, use our questionnaire. For how setup times are collected and checked, see how we verify.

Questions worth asking
Can I get a free zone licence in a day?
Some zones advertise very fast licence issuance for straightforward applications. Even then, the establishment card, visas and bank account take additional time.
What slows down a free zone setup?
Common causes are missing or unattested documents, activities that need approval from another authority, corporate shareholders with complex ownership, and name rejections.
Do I need to be in the UAE during setup?
Ask the zone whether the licence stage can be completed remotely. For a residence visa, the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics are done in the UAE.
When can I start trading?
Once the licence is issued, within the activities it covers and any approvals they need. A bank account and visas for key staff may still be needed to operate.
Are the setup times on this site guaranteed?
No. They are the times each zone states on its own channels. Confirm with the zone.
